Andernach occupies the site of the Roman fort of Autunnacum. In later centuries it was a free imperial city, the possession of which was much disputed. The town walls and gates (14th-15th C.) are well preserved. Beside the Koblenz Gate, set in gardens, can be seen the ruins of a castle of the Electors of Cologne which was destroyed in 1689. In
