Andernach Attractions

Andernach occupies the site of the Roman fort of Autunnacum. In later centuries it was a free imperial city, the possession of which was much disputed. The town walls and gates (14th-15th C.) are well preserved. Beside the Koblenz Gate, set in gardens, can be seen the ruins of a castle of the Electors of Cologne which was destroyed in 1689. In the Markt is the Late Gothic Town Hall (1572) and to the west of the square the beautiful Late Romanesque Liebfrauenkirche (13th C.).
