Altotting Attractions
Altötting, the oldest and most celebrated pilgrimage center in Bavaria, with the mother house of the Capuchin order, lies on a hill on the right bank of the Inn, roughly half way between Munich and Passau.
History
Altötting first appears in the records in 748, the Holy Chapel in 877. The pilgrimage to the Virgin of Altötting began in 1489 and reached its highest point in the reign of Elector Maximilian I (1598-1654). The town still attracts over 500,000 pilgrims a year. It was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1980.

The Brother Conrad Church in Altötting has a reliquary containing the remains of the saint of that name.
Local Museum
The Pilgrimage and Heimatmuseum in Altötting contains material recovered by excavation, a model of the Baroque square, objects expressing popular piety, votive offerings, etc.

Marienwerk
On the west side of Kapellplatz is the Altöttinger Marienwerk, where visitors are shown films on the life of the Virgin and of Brother Conrad and on the Pope's visit, and can see dioramas on the history of the pilgrimage.
Panorama
The Panorama in Altötting is a colossal painting of the Crucifixion (by Gebhard Fugel, 1903). Near the Panorama, at Kreszentiaheimstrasse 18, is a "mechanical Nativity scene", with wooden figures from Oberammergau.

Stiftskirche
The twin-towered Stiftskirche (collegiate church of SS Philip and James) in Altötting is a hall-church, built about 1500. It contains the grave slab of the Frankish King Carloman (d. 880).
At the southeast corner of the cloister is the Tilly Chapel or St Peter's Chapel, with a vault containing the remains of General Count Tilly (d. 1632).
