Altenberg Attractions

The old mining town of Altenberg lies on the Geisingberg in the eastern Erzgebirge, on the road from Dresden via Zinnwald to Prague, only 4km/2.5mi from the frontier with the Czech Republic.
Pinge
Altenberg's main tourist attraction is the Pinge, a huge crater formed in 1620 by the simultaneous collapse of a number of small mining shafts. Originally with an area of 1.25 ha/3 ac, it now covers 22 ha/55 ac and is steadily being extended by further mining.
Burg Lauenstein
A few kilometers northeast of Altenberg in the Müglitz valley are Burg Lauenstein, an old frontier fortress, and the little town of Lauenstein, with its Schloss (old pharmacy), burghers' houses and Falknerbrunnen (fountain) as reminders of its medieval past. The church contains fine sculpture and relief carving, including works by the Pirna sculptor Michael Schwenke (1563-1610).
