Allgau Attractions

Länder: Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria

The Allgäu is an attractive upland and mountain region (ridges of post-tectonic sediments, moraines) in the Alpine Foreland. It occupies the southern part of Bavarian Swabia between Lake Constance and the Lech valley and extends northwest into Württemberg.

The Allgäu is traversed by the Deutsche Alpenstrasse and, farther north, a branch of the Upper Swabian Baroque Highway.

The high Alpine chain of the Allgäu Alps, part of the Northern Calcareous Alps, forms with its bizarrely shaped peaks the boundary between Bavaria and the Austrian provinces of Vorarlberg and Tirol. The highest point is the Grosser Krottenkopf (2,657m/8,718ft) in northern Tirol.

The landscape of the Allgäu, with its tiers of steep foothills, magnificent lakes (Alpsee, Grüntensee, Weissensee, Hopfensee, Forggensee, etc.), quiet ponds and moors, extensive forests, lush mountain meadows and trim villages set against an imposing backdrop of mountains, is strikingly beautiful and attracts large numbers of visitors both in summer and for winter sports.

Characteristic of the region are the "grass hills" (e.g. Höfats, 2,258m/7,408ft), whose steep slopes hold potential hazards for hill walkers.

Noted for its intensive cattle-rearing (the famous Allgäu breed) and highly developed dairy industry (milk, butter, cheese), the Allgäu is also a region of spas and medicinal springs. The well-known Kneipp water cure was first devised in Bad Wörishofen and is now applied in many other spas. There are also mud baths and various mineral springs. Sunshine and mountain air also have their health-giving effect.
