Midway Historic District, Midway, Georgia

The Midway Historic District consists of the midway Museum, Church and Cemetery. The original Midway Congregational Church was established in 1752 but was burned during the American Revolution. The church was rebuilt in 1792 and still stands today.
The Midway Museum houses documents, exhibits, and furnishings from the Colonial period through December, 1865. The museum is housed in a replica 18th century cottage-style house.
Two Generals from the American Revolution are buried in the Cemetery - Daniel Stewart and James Screven. A monument at the center of the cemetery is dedicated to them.

Golden Isles

The Golden Isles lie off the coast of Savannah and stretch as far as the Florida border. They offer leisure and holidaying facilities that can be expensive but may be worth considering. The best known are St Simon's Island, Jekyll Island, the former "millionaires' island", and Cumberland Island with its unspoilt natural beauty.

St Simons Island - Fort Frederica National Monument

Fort Frederica was used by the British to protect Georgia and South Carolina from the Spanish.
The fort was erected in the late 1730s and the town of Frederica was established. Land disputes led to the 1742 the Battle of Bloody Marsh which ended the fighting. A visitor's center explains the history and displays related artifacts.

Museum of Coastal History

Housed in a 1872 lighthouse keeper's house on St Simons Island, the Museum of Coastal History offers information on the history of the St Simons lighthouse and on the life of lighthouse keepers.

Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island is also known as "millionaires island". It was bought by a group of East Coast millionaires who named themselves the Jekyll Island Club. In 1947 the island was sold to Georgia for use as a state park. The island is now a resort area with beaches, nature trails, golf facilities, and camping areas.

Jekyll Museum

The Jekyll Museum houses a collection of decorative arts, photographs, and historical artifacts, located in cottages in the historic district.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site, Brunswick, Georgia

The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site features an estate that was a center for rice cultivation in the 19th century. It is located in the marshlands of the Altamaha River. The museum has period furnishings and a silver collection.

Mary Miller Doll Museum (closed)

St Marys Submarine Museum, St Marys

The St Marys Submarine Museum features exhibits on the significance of submarines in America's war efforts.

Fort King George State Historic Site, Darien, Georgia

Fort King George was built in 1721 and was the southern outpost of the British Empire in North America in the early 1700s. The fort has been reconstructed and opened to the public. A museum on the site explains its history.

Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Center, Pooler, Georgia

The Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Center in Pooler is dedicated to the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from WWII to the present day. On display are historical items related to the Eighth Air Force.

Tybee Island

Tybee Island is located 18mi/29km east of Savannah. It is a popular resort area with a large beach area and some historical sites.

Lighthouse

Visitors to the Tybee Island Lighthouse can climb the stairs to the top which stands 150ft/46m tall. The first lighthouse at this location was built in 1733 but was replaced by new ones in 1742, 1773, and rebuilt again following partial destruction by Confederate troops in 1862.

Tybee Island Marine Science Center

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center features aquariums and displays on marine life indigenous to the area.

Tybee Island Museum

The Tybee Island Museum is housed in the 1899 Battery Garland. Displays highlight the history of Tybee Island.
