Other Destinations and Attractions in Georgia

Blairsville is located in north Georgia in the Appalachian mountains. It is a clean air community with local events that appeal to residents and visitors alike.

The County Historical Museum is located in the restored old Union County courthouse. The museum displays historical artifacts and chronicles the history of Union County.

Vogel State Park is located south of Blairsville in the Chattahoochee National Forest along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming are all popular activities in the park.

Vann House State Historic Site is the 1804 home of Cherokee chief James Vann. The mansion has been restored and stands as a memorial to the Cherokee Nation.

The Chattahoochee National Forest covers almost 750,000 acres in northern Georgia. The area offers camping, hiking, and picnic sites.

Dahlonega (pop. 3,600) was a boom town created during the Gold Rush. It is now a tourist destination.

The Chestatee Wildlife Preserve is located southeast of Dahlonega. It features wild animals and on occasion their new babies.

The Dahlonega Gold Museum is housed in the 19th C courthouse, which was built using local bricks with trace amounts of gold. The museum explores the history of mining in Georgia, including mining techniques, lives of prospectors, and gold coins.

Rock City on top of Lookout Mountain is a "city" of natural rock formations with 400 species of native plants. The Enchanted Trail leads through tunnels to various heights and through narrow crevices. The Enchanted Garden of Lights runs from November through January with over 500,000 lights and 25 holiday scenes.

Westville is a living history museum located southwest of Lumpkin. It features relocated and restored historical buildings from the area. The complex recreates an 1850s village with costumed interpreters and demonstrating crafts and offering a glimpse of life during this time period.

The Travelers Rest Historic Site structure in located east of Toccoa. It was built in 1815 and served as both a residence and an inn which came to be called the Traveler's Rest. The building features original furnishings and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
