Valdosta, Georgia

Valdosta (pop. 44,000) was originally named Troupville. The town is located in southern Georgia, near the Florida border. It was relocated to take advantage of the railroad route and was renamed Valdosta. It features three historic districts.

Nicholls - General Coffee State Park

Located within General Coffee State Park, the Heritage Farm has log cabins, a corn crib, tobacco barn, cane mill, barnyard animals and other exhibits. General John Coffee was a planter, US Congressman and military leader.

Okefenokee Swamp

The Okefenokee Swamp, known to the Indians as the "Land of the Quaking Earth", is an area of swampland in southern Georgia, over 770 sq. mi. - a maze of watercourses, cypress swamps and swamp grassland. Interesting features are the "floating islands", which quake under foot but nevertheless support whole forests and in the past provided protection for Indian settlements. The swamp is home to many endangered species and has no fewer that 10,000 alligators. From the little town of Waycross there are boat trips into the swamp.

Waycross - Okefenokee Swamp Park

The Okefenokee Swamp Park is a 1,600 acre wildlife sanctuary with a flower and butterfly garden, wilderness walkway and educational center.

Chieftains Museum, Rome, Georgia

The Chieftains Museum is housed in the 1792 Rome home of the Cherokee Nation leader, Major Ridge. It contains a collection of historical items related to the Cherokee Indians.

New Echota State Historic Site, Calhoun

New Echota State Historic Site is the site of the former capital of the Cherokee Nation. The buildings have been recreated and are open for visitors to tour. There is a museum explaining the history of the site and the Cherokee Nation.
New Echota is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Barnsley Gardens, Adairsville

Barnsley Gardens is a 30 acre estate that includes a homestead, outbuildings, a cemetery, and a museum. The museum features family memorabilia of the original owner, Sir Godfrey Barnsley. The garden is a 19th century style design with fountains.
Also on the property is a resort and golf course.

Paradise Gardens, Summerville

Paradise Gardens in Summerville was created by the Reverend Howard Finster. It contains his folk art creations made of various recycled materials. There are also creative programs for children and adults.

Oak Hill and Martha Berry Museum

Martha Berry is considered the mother of public education in Georgia. The museum features artifacts and items from her life.

Helen, Georgia

The town of Helen (pop. 400) is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a re-creation of an alpine village complete with cobblestone alleys and old-world towers.

Alpine Antique Auto and Buggy Museum (closed)

The Alpine Antique Auto and Buggy Museum features vintage autos and horse drawn buggy's from the early 1900's through the late 1970's. Some of the unique items on display include an 1840 era hearse, Civil War ambulance, 1848 Victorian carriage, late 1800 mail wagon and an 1800 water wagon.

Black Forest Bear Park and Reptile Exhibit

The Black Forest Bear Park and Reptile Exhibit features 14 adult bears with enclosures that feature swimming pools and trees to climb.

Cumberland Island National Seashore

Cumberland Island was once owned by the Carnegie family. It is now a protected National Seashore. Built in 1901 as a family home, the mansion fetaures family heirlooms and antiques.
The Island has a well-preserved habitat that is home to sea turtles, wild turkeys, sandpipers, sea gulls, and osprey, dune fields, maritime forests and salt marshes.

Chattahoochee National Forest

The Chattahoochee National Forest covers almost 750,000 acres in northern Georgia. The area offers camping, hiking, and picnic sites.

Lookout Mountain - Rock City Gardens

Rock City on top of Lookout Mountain is a "city" of natural rock formations with 400 species of native plants. The Enchanted Trail leads through tunnels to various heights and through narrow crevices. The Enchanted Garden of Lights runs from November through January with over 500,000 lights and 25 holiday scenes.

Travelers Rest Historic Site, Toccoa

The Travelers Rest Historic Site structure in located east of Toccoa. It was built in 1815 and served as both a residence and an inn which came to be called the Traveler's Rest. The building features original furnishings and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Vann House State Historic Site, Chatsworth

Vann House State Historic Site is the 1804 home of Cherokee chief James Vann. The mansion has been restored and stands as a memorial to the Cherokee Nation.

Dahlonega

Dahlonega (pop. 3,600) was a boom town created during the Gold Rush. It is now a tourist destination.

Dahlonega - Chestatee Wildlife

The Chestatee Wildlife Preserve is located southeast of Dahlonega. It features wild animals and on occasion their new babies.

Gold Museum, Dahlonega

The Dahlonega Gold Museum is housed in the 19th C courthouse, which was built using local bricks with trace amounts of gold. The museum explores the history of mining in Georgia, including mining techniques, lives of prospectors, and gold coins.

Westville, Lumpkin

Westville is a living history museum located southwest of Lumpkin. It features relocated and restored historical buildings from the area. The complex recreates an 1850s village with costumed interpreters and demonstrating crafts and offering a glimpse of life during this time period.

County Historical Museum

The County Historical Museum is located in the restored old Union County courthouse. The museum displays historical artifacts and chronicles the history of Union County.

Vogel State Park, Blairsville

Vogel State Park is located south of Blairsville in the Chattahoochee National Forest along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming are all popular activities in the park.
