The site that became Albany (pop. 163,000) was bought in 1836 to become a town. It is located along the Flint River in southwest Georgia and was once inhabited by Creek Indians. The area saw the development of plantations in the mid 1800s, which eventually helped to support the Confederacy during the Civil War.
