Genoa - Via Garibaldi Palaces

In the narrow Via Garibaldi, designed by Galeazzo Alessi, are a succession of palaces, with fine collections of pictures. On the right (No. 9) is the former Palazzo Doria Tursi, now the Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall), begun in 1564. It contains Niccolò Paganini's violin and manuscripts by Christopher Columbus. On the left (No. 18) is the Palazzo Rosso, a splendid 17th century mansion which belonged to the Brignole-Sale family (17th century), containing a picture gallery on the first and second floors; notable particularly for its fine family portraits (works by Van Dyck, Paris Bordone, Bernardo Strozzi, Veronese, Moretto, Titian, Tintoretto, Caravaggio, etc.). Almost opposite (No. 11) is the Palazzo Bianco, a Brignole palace (originally 1548, altered after 1712), which also houses a notable picture gallery, with works by Italian, Dutch and Flemish masters.
