Description
The harbor of Genoa (22km/14mi wharves, 128km/79mi of railroad lines; annual turnover 50million tons) consists of the inner harbor or Porto Vecchio, constructed about 1250, the Porto Nuovo (1877 onwards), the naval harbor (Darsena) and the outer harbor, or Avamporto, together with the more recently constructed Bacino della Lanterna and Bacino di San Pier d'Arena. On the edge of Porto Vecchio rises the tower "Lanterna" (1543; 76m/251ft), the symbol of the city. The eastern part of the harbor, along Corso Maurizio Quadrio, is occupied by the little Porticciolo Duca degli Abruzzi, used by yachts and sailing boats. The whole harbor is enclosed by breakwaters, the Diga Foranea dell'Aeroporto, the Diga di Cornigliano, the Diga Foranea and the Molo Duca di Galliera. There are very attractive boat trips around the harbor (about two hours).
