From the west side of Piazza Fontane Marose in Genoa a major traffic artery formed by Via Garibaldi, Via Cairoli and Via Balbi runs northwest to Piazza Acquaverde and the station. Laid out in the 16th and 17th centuries, this area contains a number of churches and Genoa's finest palaces, approached by magnificent flights of steps which are one of the particular sights of Genoa.
