Barberspan Nature Reserve

The Barberspan Nature Reserve (area 3,100ha/7,660ac), the largest reserve for water birds in the Transvaal, has been declared an International Wetland Area. Some 350 species of birds have been recorded here. After heavy rain in September and October the lake which is the central feature of the reserve expands to cover an area of 2,000ha/5,000ac, with a depth of up to 8m/26ft. It then becomes the home and breeding area of innumerable coots, various species of ducks and geese, grebes and many other water birds. The flamingos, however, prefer a rather lower water level. The lake is also a paradise for anglers and the scene of fishing competitions. The only accommodation for visitors is a camping site.
