Northwest of Puerto Villamil is the 1490m/4487ft Volcán Santo Tomás. A rough road leads from Puerto Villamil to a small village at the base of the volcano. From the village it's possible to rent a horse or hike another 9km/5.5mi to the rim of the 10km/6mi wide caldera. Common to this area are Galápagos hawks, short-eared owls, finches and flycatchers.
