Saverne (pop. 11,534), the Roman Tres Tabernae, chief town of the Vosges region in the Middle Ages and from 1414 to 1789 a residence of the bishops of Strasbourg, lies at the point where the river Zorn and the Rhine-Marne Canal enter the Alsatian plain. To the west of the Town Hall (1900) is the former Franciscan church (14th C), with a Gothic cloister.
The neo-classical Château Rohan, the palace of the bishops of Strasbourg, was built in 1779-1789 of red sandstone on the site of an earlier castle. It now houses a youth hostel, museums of archeology, art and history and the Louis Weiss Museum.
