Mulhouse Attractions
Mulhouse (pop. 111,000) is the second largest town in Alsace and the industrial metropolis of Upper Alsace. The warehouses on the river port northwest of the town are among the largest in the world. From 1308 to 1515 Mulhouse was a free imperial city and a member of the league of 10 Alsacian free cities. Thereafter, until 1648, it was Swiss; between 1798 and 1871 it was French, from then until 1918 it was German, and then returned to France. Mulhouse lies between the Vosges and the Black Forest at the point where the Upper Rhine plain merges into the uplands of the Sundgau, and is traversed by the rivers Doller and Ill and by the Rhine-Rhône Canal. The town of Mulhouse has a university, founded in 1969.
