Marmoutier (pop. 2,436) has one of the most beautiful churches in Alsace, the abbey church of St-Maur, which belonged to a Benedictine abbey founded in 724. The present church, of dark red sandstone, was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its main features of interest are the curious animal figures on the Romanesque facade, the ancient foliage capitals in the porch, a Silbermann organ of 1709 in the Gothic nave and beautifully carved stalls in the 18th C choir.
