Les Ste Maries-de-la-Mer is situated in the extreme west of Provence, in the flat country of lagoons and salt steppes of the Camargue.
The place owes its name to the legend, according to which the three Marys - Mary (sister of the Virgin Mary), Mary Salome (mother of the
Apostles James and John) and Mary Magdalene (the penitent) - in A.D.45, with their black servant, Sarah, having been set adrift in a boat without equipment or supplies, landed here and converted Provence to Christianity.
In recent years the place has been extensively remodelled into a holiday center. In general the conversion has been successful, the erection of tall buildings having been avoided.
