Entrevaux Attractions

Amid the picturesque scenery of the upper reaches of the River Var, 43km/27mi northeast of Castellane and 70km/43mi northwest of Nice, lies the old town of Entrevaux on the left bank of the river. 135m/443ft above the village towers a steep rocky crag crowned by a Citadel. The finest view of the township and the citadel is to be had from the road to the Col de Felines/Col de Buis, which winds its way up the valley above the village.

Entrevaux was founded in the 11th C. Because of its position Louis XIV ordered Vauban to build new fortifications during the war between France and Savoy. He linked the citadel with the village and had bastions and towers erected.

Entrevaux is the birthplace of Augustin Bonnetty (1798-1879) the founder of the "Annales de la Philosophie Chrétienne".
Entrevaux Steam Trains
Entrevaux lies on the narrow-gauge railroad Annot-Puget-Théniers, part of the line from Nice to Digne. On some Sundays from the beginning of May until the end of October a special train operates on this line; it is hauled by a steam locomotive of the Mallet type, built in 1923 by Henschel in Kassel, and is made up of old carriages. Information - indispensible, since there is only one return journey - can be obtained from Chemins de Fer de la Provence.
