Chateauneuf-du-Pape Attractions

The famous town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies between Orange and Avignon in a gently undulating landscape near the left bank of the Rhône away from the main road.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies on a gently sloping hill, clustered about the ruins of the castle which the popes built as a summer residence at the time of their exile in Avignon and which gave the place its name. Only the high tower and remains of the walls are still to be seen, but there are rewarding views of Avignon, the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux.

The new stretch of the TGV high-speed railroad line is scheduled to run through the area of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It will divide villages and vineyards and there is understandable opposition to the proposal.

Festivals
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the center of an area exclusively devoted to the growing of vines, as the pebbly soil is unsuitable for any other form of agriculture.
The Fête de St-Marc takes place around April 25. On the first weekend in August the Fête de la Véraison takes place. The proclamation of the harvest, the Ban des Vendanges, takes place during the second half of September.
