Alpilles Attractions

The chain of the Alpilles (Little Alps) extends east of the Rhône between St-Rémy-de-Provence to the north and Les Baux to the south. In spite of its relatively modest height the steep limestone massif has a thoroughly Alpine appearance. Geologically the Alpilles are a continuation of the Lubéron, the mountain range adjoining on the east which runs parallel to the northern bank of the Durance. The western (Alpilles de Baux) and the eastern (Alpilles d'Eygalières) parts are different in character. The first discoveries of bauxite were made in the Alpilles.
La Caume
The highest point of the Alpilles is the Caume (387m/1,270ft). The summit, from which there are excellent views, can be reached on a road - sometimes closed - which branches off to the east on road D5 between St-Rémy and Les Baux. The panorama extends as far as the mouth of the Rhône and the Camargue in the west and to Mont Ventoux and the Valley of the Durance in the east.
