Parque Nacional Ubajara
The Ubajara National Park (area 563 hectares/1390 acres; established 1959) lies in the commune of Ubajara in north-western Ceará, 350km/217mi west of Fortaleza. From Fortaleza take BR 222 for 330km/205mi, then 18km/11mi on the Tianguá-Ubahara road, and finally 2km/1.3mi to the park entrance. From Teresina in the neighboring state of Piauí it is 309km/192mi on asphalted roads (BR 343 to Piripiri, then BR 222 to Tianguá).
Also within the National Park is a narrow strip of the Chapada de Ibiapaba, which forms the northern part of the boundary between Ceará and Piauí. This rugged highland region has many limestone formations with caves and sheer rock walls. The vegetation consists mainly of carnauba palms, juazeiros (a tree with edible fruits) and cactuses; the fauna includes wild foxes, capuchin monkeys, marsupials, hedgehogs and various species of birds (sparrowhawks, king vultures, etc.).
