Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

37mi/60km west of Colorado Springs on U.S. 24 (Ute Pass) are the very interesting Florissant Fossil Beds (stumps of fossil trees, etc.).
The 6,000-acre area has hiking trails, an old 1878 homestead and an information center.

Hornbek Homestead
The Hornbek Homestead was built in 1878 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. As part of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, it was the first homestead in the Florissant Valley and offers living history programs. The homestead belonged to Adeline Hornbek, who raised her four children and ran a successful ranch.
