On the main island of Åland is the only town in the group, Mariehamn (Finnish Maarianhamina; pop. 25,000). Situated on a promontory at the south end of the island, it is a very popular seaside resort. In the center of Mariehamn, in Norra Esplanadsgatan, stands the church of St Göran - completed in 1927 and noted for its stained glass.
The Pommern belonged to Gustaf Erikson's fleet of windjammers from 1923 to 1952 which sailed in the grain trade between Australia and England. It now serves as a museum-ship with photographs depicting a voyage from Australia to Mariehamn in 1934.
