Finnish Lapland, a forest-covered region of hills and bog with an area of some 94,000sq.km/36,000sq.mi, is similar in many respects to Swedish Lapland, but the hills are lower. Only in the extreme northwest, where a finger of territory reaches into the Scandinavian mountains, is there a peak of greater height - Haltiatunturi (1,328m/4,357ft), the highest peak in Finland. Almost the whole of Finnish Lapland is covered with forests; in the south spruce predominates, but beyond Lake Inari there are only pines and birches. At higher altitudes there are expanses of lichen-covered tundra. The area has been made more easily accessible to visitors by the construction of roads and the provision of hotels and other accommodation. The administrative center of Finnish Lapland is Rovaniemi, a few kilometers south of the Arctic Circle.
