Where to Stay & What to See in Finland

An oasis of natural forests, serene lakes and scenic countryside, Finland is a charming European country that is definitely worth visiting. From the smaller, well-preserved historical towns like Turku and Tampere to tranquil islands like Naantali, Finland possesses a wealth of treasures to be explored. Larger urban cities like Helsinki offer everything from tasty Nordic specialties, delightful sightseeing and wonderful shopping opportunities. In the summertime, Finland is the ideal venue for outdoor sports such as boating, sailing, and fishing. In the colder winter months, skiing is a popular activity. Finding suitable accommodation options is not a problem as there are plenty of esteemed luxury hotels in Finland to choose from.

Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, boasts splendid architecture and a plethora of top-rated attractions. Perhaps the most striking sight to see in Helsinki is the grand Senate Square which houses the Senate building. The senate square is located in Helsinki's city center, which is designed in a typically neo-classical style featuring quaint avenues and distinctly whitewashed buildings. Several five star hotels can be found in the extended city center area. One of the best luxury hotels in the city is Hotel Kamp, a landmark historical building that is amongst the finest hotels in Finland. When in Helsinki, be sure to visit the Helsinki Rock Church, a most splendid underground church made from natural granite. Helsinki offers fun for the entire family; if you are travelling with children, consider a trip to the Sea Life marine theme park which features performances by sea creatures and allows for personal encounters with the much-loved marine animals. Shopaholics will want to check out the extended Central Railway Station area where a number of Helsinki's most popular shopping centers can be found. These include the Kamppi shopping center, Forum mall, and the local department store Stockmann's. Independent boutiques and stores scattered across the city also offer interesting buys. History enthusiasts will want to visit the many impressive museums in Helsinki. Amongst the most outstanding museums to visit are the National Museum of Finland, The Finnish Art Gallery, and the City Museum in Helsinki.

In contrast to modern Helsinki, Turku is an old and history-steeped Finnish city that is quaint and charming with pretty cobblestoned streets and a meandering river that cuts through its center. As Finland's oldest city, Turku is home to several ancient monuments. Perhaps the most popular of these is Turku Castle; located in the harbor, the castle is medieval in style, and houses the spectacular Turku Historical Museum which displays an extensive collection of Finnish artifacts. When in Turku, be sure to also visit the Turku Cathedral which lies atop the Unikankari Hill and is built in a splendid combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Hotels in Turku are mostly independent, family-owned or boutique hotels and only a handful of luxury hotels can be found in the city. Perhaps the most luxurious hotel in Turku, and amongst some of the well-reputed hotels in Finland, is the Radisson Blu Marina Palace Hotel. The hotel offers great views of the city, comfortable rooms and great service.
