Fiesole - Piazza Mino da Fiesole

In the center of the town lies the broad Piazza Mino da Fiesole (named after the sculptor Mino da Fiesole, c. 1430-1484); this was the ancient forum, and on the north side stands the Duomo, the cathedral begun in 1028, extended in the 13th and 14th centuries and considerably altered in the 19th c. The Duomo San Romolo has been an episcopal church since the 11th century; its predecessor stood on the site of the present Badia Fiesolana.

The battlemented campanile, more than 42m/138ft high, dates from the 12th century. The interior is notable for its frescoes and pictures, especially in the Cappella Salutati where the monument of Bishop Leonardo Salutati was the work of Mino da Fiesole around 1465.
