Esperanza - Bahía Mosquito

2mi/3.2km off Esperanza on the south coast of Vieques is the Mosquito Bay (Bahia Moquito), with an extremely high concentration of phosphorescent dynoflagellates. This rare and remarkable phenomenon is caused by millions of luminescent dynoflagellates lighting up in the water when disturbed by movement. Also called Phosphorescent Bay, tours by boat are offered to see the natural twinkling lights in the water at night. In some cases, the tour stops for a swim.
