Enna - Torre di Federico

In a public garden in the southwest of Enna the Torre di Federico stands in isolation on a hill. The octagonal tower, surrounded by a partly preserved octagonal perimeter wall, duplicates the plan of the Castel del Monte in Apulia and has a model in Egisheim in Alsace. It definitely dates from the time of the Emperor Frederick II, is 26m/85ft high, has a diameter of 17m/56ft and a wall-thickness of 3.50m/11.5ft. In the wall there is a gap where there was a spiral staircase leading up to the two upper storys. Both main floors have magnificent rooms with ribbed vaulting in eight sections.
