Enna - Castello di Lombardia

The Via Roma in Enna continues as the Viale Savoca and ends at the Castello di Lombardia, one of the great Sicilian fortresses. Its name comes from the Lombard guard of Adelasia, the queen of the Norman Roger I, who, after the latter's death, married the King of Jerusalem and in 1118 died at Patti. The fortress - at the foot of which a monument was erected to Eunus, the leader in the slaves' revolt of 136-132 B.C. - consists of Byzantine, Norman and Hohenstaufen elements.

Of the 20 original Torre Pisana towers, six have been preserved, the highest of which is the Torre Pisana (view). Inside there are three courtyards. In the weapon-bearers' courtyard theatrical performances take place in summer. The supplies courtyard leads through into the army commander's courtyard or St Martin's Courtyard. Here there is access to the living quarters of Frederick III of Aragon.
