Chawton, England

Chawton is a small villages that is most notable to those interested in the authoress Jane Austen. Tourists can visit her retirement home in Chawton (18mi/29km northeast of Winchester), where she lived with her mother and her sister from 1809 to 1817. The more than 300-year-old, protected building is now a museum displaying manuscripts, illustrations and other Austen memorabilia.

New Alresford, England

New Alresford is an attractive town with a long history, it was founded in the 12th/13th century. It is located on the A31 6mi/9km east of Winchester.
New Alresford is also the site of several events throughout the year including the Watercress Festival, Bonfire Night and the Alresford Fair.

Hinton Ampner Garden

Hinton Ampner Garden is National Trust property near Alresford. The 18th C house has been greatly altered since a fire in 1960, but many 17th C items are on display including Italian paintings, porcelain and furniture.
The surrounding garden is a 20th C shrub garden that is of interest year round.

Northington Grange

Northington Grange is a country house designed by William Wilkins in 1809. It is one of the earliest Greek Revival houses in Europe.

Stockbridge, England

Stockbridge is a tiny hamlet on the Test northwest of Winchester. High Street in Stockbridge has a variety of shops and galleries, and visitors can stroll along the River Test.

Houghton Lodge Gardens and Hydroponicum

The Houghton Lodge Gardens and Hydroponicum is a unique destination for gardening enthusiasts as it offers a look at both a traditional Kitchen Garden as well as modern horticulture without soil. In the Kitchen Garden you will find espaliered fruit trees protected by one of the few remaining complete chalk cob boundary walks. In the hydroponicum there is a collection of tender plants and fuschias.

Museum of Army Flying

The Museum of Army Flying in Stockbridge is an award-winning celebration of army aviation history from the 1880s to present day. Light aircraft, helicopters and gliders are all found at the museum. Gliders that were used on D-Day make up one of the main exhibits.

Overton, England

Overton is situated in the rolling chalk hills and was praised by William Cobbett. The town hosts the Overton Sheep Fair, many cultural activities and has a wide variety of shops.

Avington Park

Avington Park is a Palladian house set in beautiful parkland 4mi east of Winchester.

Flowerdown Barrows

Flowerdown Barrows is an English Heritage site located two miles northwest of Winchester. These barrows are remnants of a much larger Bronze Age burial site.

Marwell Zoological Park

Six miles south of Winchester is the Marwell Zoological Park. Nearly 1,000 rare and endangered animals including tigers, rhino, giraffe and monkeys are contained in the 100 acres of parkland.

Selborne - Gilbert White's House and Oates Museum

This 18th C house with a garden in old Selborne was the home of the famous naturalist Gilbert White. Gilbert White's House has many antiques and also contains a museum on Captain Lawrence Oates ill-fated Antarctic expedition.
