Wilton is the old capital of the Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and later of the county of Wiltshire and is situated 3mi/5km west of Salisbury. The Royal Carpet Factory, founded in 1655, and several other important carpet producers are based in the village. Since the middle of the 17th century they have taken advantage of the ready supply of local wool and the services of migrant weavers from Flanders and France. The parish church was built in 1843 from plans by Wyatt, following early Christian building models, but with a mixture of styles which is very characteristic of Victorian architecture.
Wilton is home to a number of well-known antique shops, famous Wilton carpets and a market held every Thursday.
