Wantage (pop. 8,899) in the Vale of the White Horse is the birthplace of Alfred the Great (849-99) King of Wessex (871-99). There is a statue of the king in the market along with a number of shops featuring 18th century facades. The town of Wantage has had a church since the 10th century on the same site including the current Church of St Peter
