Tenterden (pop. 6,200) still displays the prosperity brought to it over the centuries by shipbuilders, clothmakers and ironworkers. St Mildred's Church dates from the 12th century, the Unitarian Chapel was completed in 1695 and St Michael's was consecrated in 1863. The Tenterden Folk Festival is held annually on the first weekend in October.
Smallhythe Place, a National Trust property, was home to the famous Shakespearean actress Dame Ellen Terry. She occupied this 16th C half-timbered house from 1899-1928. The collection of stage memorabilia on display in her hosue reveals the story of her life as well as other great names in theatre during her time.
