Newquay (8mi/13km northeast of Perranporth; pop. 15,400) is one Cornwall's best loved resorts, its sandy beaches proving irresistible to large numbers of vacationers. Beautifully situated on the open Fistral Bay, Newquay has a great many Victorian buildings and offers a variety of interesting excursions in the surrounding area. These include visits to the remains of a ninth-11th century Celtic village at Mawgan Porth, the intriguing rock scenery of the coastal nature reserve at Bedruthan Steps, and Trerice Manor, an Elizabethan manor with a fine 16th century stucco ceiling.
The Lappa Valley Steam Railway provides a 2 mile return journey between Benny Halt and East Wheal Rose. At East Wheal Rose there are activities and attractions that will entertain the whole family ranging from crazy golf to slides and swings and a children's Woodland Railway. Trerice is a National Trust property located in St Newlyn East. It is a beautiful Elizabethan manor house that was built between 1572 and 1573. Trerice is highly decorated and has notable plaster, glass and furniture.
