Jarrow (pop. 31,213) is located 6mi/10km east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The Venerable Bede spent most of his life in the 7th century monastery here. Jarrow Hall houses the Bede Monastery Museum highlighting his teachings and writings from 1300 years ago.
Bedes World offers an excellent insight into life in early Northumbria. Exhibits include: rare animal breeds, crops, historic re-enactments, monastic site ruins and the church of St Paul (over 1,300 years old). There are also some audio-visual displays.
Of particular note is the fact that Bede, an eighth century scholar, is recorded as the first English historian.
