Basingstoke Attractions

Basingstoke (pop. 70,000) is a light industrial town. One of its notable features dates back to the time of Henry VIII. The town has held a weekly market every Wednesday from 1214 to present day.

Basingstoke is noted for its shopping facilities including Festival Place, completed in 2002; Willis Museum and the Haymarket Theatre; as well as the Basingstoke Sports Centre.
Burghclere - Sandham Memorial Chapel
Sandham Memorial Chapel is a National Trust property located in Burghclere, near Basingstoke. The chapel was built for, and still contains, Stanley Spencers murals of the First World War.

Odiham, England
(Near Basingstoke)
Odiham is on the Basingstoke Canal between Basingstoke and Farnham. There is a castle in the area, now in ruins, that was built from 1207 to 1214.

South of Odiham is the Royal Air Force Aerodrome where aircraft flying operations take place.

Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre
Silchester Roman City Walls are the remains of a Roman tribal settlement and rare rural arena. In the Iron Age, the region in which modern Silchester is located was once part of the tribal territory of the Atrebates.
The Vyne
Built in the early 16th C of diaper brickwork for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain. The classical portico was added in the mid 17th C and contains a fascinating Tudor Chapel with renaissance glass, a Palladian staircase and a wealth of old panelling and fine furniture. The grounds feature herbaceous borders and a wild garden with lawns, lakes and woodland walks.
