Alnwick, England

Situated 4mi/6km inland from Alnmouth is Alnwick (pop. 8,000), a tiny medieval town situated high above the banks of the River Aln.
Alnwick is dominated by the Alnwick Castle rising to the west of the town. The castle was started in 1096 and added to until the 19th century. It has been used by numerous educational institutions but is open to tourists from April to September.

Alnwick Castle (Regimental Museum)

This medieval fortress, built in the 12th C, has been well preserved. It contains 17th to 19th C French furnishings, paintings, and Roman antiquities.

Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle is a medieval castle surrounded by formal gardens. Inside you will find impressive stonework, plasterwork and state rooms filled with tapestries, fine furniture and armor. There are also shocking dungeons and a torture chambe and it is said to be haunted.

Howick Hall

This woodland that rests a safe distance from the sea possesses a notable microclimate. Two gardens, one an elegant woodland with rhododendrons and trilliums, and the other an exquisite formal garden.

Seahouses

The resort town of Seahouses is located on the North Sea coast. Boat tours depart from the harbour for the Farne Islands to view seals and seabirds as well as scuba diving among the many wrecks.

Wooler

Wooler is a pleasant little town located on the edge of Northumberland National Park. Visitors will enjoy walking through the town or up Humbleton Hill to the site of a battle in 1402.

Kimmerston Riding Centre

The Kimmerston Riding Centre offers unique rides along the local grassland, moorland and woodland, as well as excursions to the beach with bareback rides in the sea. All levels of tuition in riding and hunting are given with on mature horses and ponies. Residential holidays for teenagers and there are also self-catering cottages for families.

Alnwick International Music Festival

This annual week-long festival takes place in August and brings together musicians and dancers from all over the world.

This annual fair runs from June to July.

Edlingham Castle

Edlingham Castle is a medieval castle ruin set in a valley near Alnwick.

Alnwick - St Michael's Church

The parish church of St Michael is in the Perpendicular style of the 15th century and has superb Victorian glass windows.

Dustanburgh Castle

From Alnmouth the road to the seaside resort of Seahouses runs past Dustanburgh Castle, begun in 1314. Here, with luck, the visitor may find some of the colored quartz crystals known as "Dustanburgh diamonds" which are used in the manufacture of souvenirs.

Alnwick - Dunstanburgh Castle

At Dunstanburgh Castle visitors will find the ruins of a castle built in 1316. The original castle was later enlarged and then severely damaged during the War of the Roses.
The ruins are under the guardianship of the National Trust.

Farne Islands

From Seahouses and the neighboring village of Bamburgh there are motorboat trips to the uninhabited Farne Islands, a group of some 30 dolerite islets lying between 1.5 and 5mi (2-8km) offshore, now a bird reserve. More than 20 species nest on the islands, which are also the home of seals. During the nesting season only a few of the islands are open to visitors. St Cuthbert spent eight years here as a hermit.
