Sanctuary of Demeter Description
From the entrance to the site we walk past remains dating from the Roman period (temple of Artemis, triumphal arch) to the Great Propylaia (A.D. second century), to the left of which is the circular mouth of the Kallichoros well. Beyond this are the older Little Propylaia (54 B.C.), to the right of which, on the hillside, can be seen the Ploutonion, a cave sacred to Pluto.

The central feature of the site is the Telesterion, the hall in which the mysteries were celebrated. The Solonic Telesterion was built around 600 B.C. on the site of a small Mycenaean temple of the 14th century B.C., with an Anaktoron (holy of holies) which remained until Roman times the central element in the structure.
