Eisenach Market - Fountain
Outside the west door of the church in the Eisenach Market can be found an old market fountain with a figure of St George, the town's patron saint (by H. Leonhardt, 1549).
Schloss
At the north end of the Markt in Eisenach stands the Schloss (1742-51), in relatively plain Baroque style. In the left-hand wing is the Thuringian Museum, with Thuringian faience and porcelain of the 18th and 19th centuries, Thuringian glass of several centuries and a picture gallery (mainly old German masters). There are tablets commemorating Goethe's friend Charlotte von Stein and Luise von Göchhausen (who copied the original version of Goethe's "Faust" and thus preserved it for posterity), both of whom were born in Eisenach.
St George Church
In the Eisenach Markt is the parish church of St George, a hall-church with a richly furnished interior (tombs of Landgraves of Thuringia). Luther preached in this church on May 2, 1521, in spite of the fact that he had been outlawed by the imperial authorities. Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized here on March 23, 1685; there are frequent performances of his works in the church.
