Beni Suef Attractions

The provincial capital of Beni Suef, famed in the Middle Ages for its linen, lies on the west bank of the Nile, at the point where the valley is at its widest and a road goes off into the Fayyum. It is the economic center of the fertile surrounding region, with various processing industries (particularly cotton) and a large bazaar.

St Antony lived as a hermit in an abandoned fort in the hills opposite Beni Suef before withdrawing to the solitude of the Arabian Desert near the Red Sea, and a desert track still runs from the east bank of the Nile opposite the town to St Antony's Monastery and is used by the monks for obtaining the supplies they require; it is not suitable for cars. On the edge of the desert are several ancient alabaster quarries.
