Edinburgh International Festival

The Edinburgh Festival which begins on the second Sunday in August and lasts for three weeks has taken place every year since 1947. It was the brainchild of the Englishman Rudolf Bing who first sought the support of the authorities in Oxford and Cambridge, but they showed little interest, so he chose Edinburgh. The events include drama, opera, music and art exhibitions.
This is the world's largest arts festival, and includes the participation of dozens of internationally-acclaimed performers.

Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has become an important sideshow for the main event. Unknown theater groups, amateurs and new talent present anything from avant-garde drama, impromptu street theater and cabaret to rock, pop and classical music.
The Fringe Festival begins on the second Sunday of August and runs for three weeks.

International Jazz Festival

Running in tandem with the main Edinburgh Festival is the International Jazz Festival.
The festival lasts one week in early August and takes place in various venues. Events include a grand parade, concerts, dances and late night performances.
The Jazz Festival usually begins on the first Sunday in August.

Military Tattoo

In the evenings a few days before the Edinburgh Festival begins, a Military Tattoo takes place on the Esplanade in front of the castle. Regiments from all over the world parade up and down with their drums and pipes.

Edinburgh (Glasgow - French Film Festival)

This annual ten-day festival takes place in two theaters in separate cities - the Edinburgh Filmhouse and the Glasgow Film Theater.
Contrary to its name, the French Film Festival runs screenings of British premieres and special tributes.
The events take place in late October.

Edinburgh Book Festival

The Book Festival runs during the month of August featuring hundreds of events that include meeting authors, browsing the bookshops or watching storybook characters come to life.

Hogmanay Festival

This annual festival takes place between December 30 and January 1 and celebrates the new year with music, theater, carnivals, and other festivities.
It is considered to be Britain's biggest street party.

Old Town Arts Festival

This annual festival takes place in mid-June and includes a mixture of traditional and modern elements. The program includes performances featuring Scottish culture, as well as all types of modern arts.

Spring Fling

This annual weekend event takes place in late May as a celebration of the summer months ahead. Public parties, open-air galas, street fairs and musical and theatrical performances are only some of the events offered during the weekend.

Edinburgh International Science Festival

Edinburgh International Science Festival runs from late March to mid-April and includes workshops, lectures and exhibitions.

International Film Festival

The annual two-week International Film Festival takes place in June. The events include documentaries, regular and special screenings, and seminars.

Scottish International Children's Festival

This annual week-long festival includes mimes, musicians, dancers, actors, and puppeteers from around the world.
