Durham Castle
|
|
Having been built as a fortress by the Earl of Northumberland in 1072, Durham Castle, on the far side of Palace Green from the cathedral, was presented by William the Conqueror to the prince-bishops of Durham, whose feudal residence it then became. The most interesting rooms are the Norman chapel (1080; with delightful archaic capitals), the large dining-hall (ca. 1300), the kitchen with its fireplace and pantry (1499), and the bishop's apartments. Since 1832 the spacious castle has been part of Durham's University College.
