Durban - Port Area

Durban's port, the largest and most important in South Africa (and the ninth largest in the world, with an area of 1854ha/4579ac), is enclosed by two promontories, each extended by a pier, the Point, at the end of the Golden Mile, to the north and the Bluff, a 4km/2.5mi long range of dunes, now covered with buildings, to the south. To enable the harbor to accommodate large vessels it was dredged out to a depth of 12.80m/42ft.

Large passenger and cruise ships berth at the Ocean or Marine Terminal at the north end of the harbor basin. Close by are the offices of the port administration.
