Dunfermline - Abbey

About 1070 Queen Margaret helped to establish a priory for Benedictine monks in the town. Her son David I elevated the priory to an abbey and by 1128 it had been extended in Norman style. It now forms the west side of the church. Between 1818 and 1821 the east side above the destroyed chancel was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style by William Burn.

The words "Robert the Bruce" can be read on the balustrade of the rectangular tower.
