The reservoir in the Chelmsford Nature Reserve supplies water to Newcastle (pop. 40,000), 25km/15mi away. The town, situated at the foot of the Natal Drakensberg, was founded in 1864 and named after the Duke of Newcastle, then colonial secretary. It is now an important center of steel production.
