Description
From Hjerkinn the E6 passes a lake, the Avsjø, and comes in 10km/6mi to Hjerkinn (alt. 956m/3,137ft), in a wide high valley in the Dovrefjell. This is the driest place in Norway, with an annual rainfall of only 217mm/8.5in. To the west is a military area closed to the public (firing range). The Eystein Church (1969) commemorates King Eystein Magnusson, who built a chain of mountain huts in the 12th century. The Royal Road, traveled by 41 reigning monarchs, is marked by a series of cairns. 1km/0.75mi north is the highest point on the road (1,026m/3,366ft). On the Tverfjell to the west are the Folldal mines (iron ore, pyrites, copper). To the north is the Hjerkinnhø (1,282m/4,206ft; 1.5 hours' climb), from the summit of which there are magnificent views of Snøhetta, the Rondane range and the Jotunheim.

Road 29 goes off on the right to Folldal (27km/17mi ), from which it is possible either to turn south on Road 27 or to continue via Røros to the Swedish frontier (174km/108mi).
