Independence Celebrations

Independence Celebrations honor Dominica's historic past and rich cultural traditions.
Celebrations include Creole Week which starts with Heritage Day highlighting Dominica's history and ends with Creole Day with its traditional clothes and Creole food.
Vendors island-wide display their produce on Market Day.
On Independence Day or National Day there is a parade of uniformed troops and a grand cultural festival.
The National Day of Community Service consists of approved community projects completed in one day.

Creole Day

Creole Day is a celebration of Dominica's Creole language and culture. It includes traditional dancing, folklore, food and music.

Carnival

Dominica's Carnival includes calypso competitions, a Carnival Queen contest, 'jump-ups' and a costume parade.
Celebrations are held during the traditional Mardi Gras period, in the two weeks prior to Lent.

Dominica Festival of the Creative Arts (DOMFESTA)

Domfesta, a one week festival of dance, music, drama, fine arts, cuisine, and literary arts showcases the best of Dominica's creative arts. The "Golden Drum Award" is given to outstanding contributors in each field.

Portsmouth Marine Festival

Water sports including traditional boat racing and swimming are enjoyed at the Portsmouth Marine Festival, plus calypso and the popular "Miss Swimwear Creole" contest.

World Creole Music Festival

The World Creole Music Festival is held during Independence Celebrations for a one-week period in several places throughout the island.
The origins of this musical form stem mainly from Dominica, the French Caribbean, and East and West Africa.
