Gightis

Access

Gightis lies on MC 108 (Djorf-Médenine), just south of the turn-off for Bou Grara.

Some 20km/12.5mi south of Djorf and 27km/17mi north of Médenine is the Roman site of Gightis. Although it is not quite so impressive as the Roman towns of northern Tunisia, it makes an attractive trip from Djerba.

History

A trading post was established here in the sixth century B.C. by Phoenicians from Tyre. Thanks to its situation on the Gulf of Bou Grara it soon developed into an important port where the caravans discharged their wares. In A.D. 48 the Romans captured the town and developed it further. It survived the fall of the Roman Empire and in the fourth century became a Christian stronghold in southern Tunisia, but thereafter was destroyed by the Vandals.
