Dijon - Musée des Beaux-Arts
|
|
The east wing of the Ducal Palace in Dijon is occupied by the Musée des Beaux-Arts, one of France's leading art museums. On the ground floor are displays illustrating the history of the building and the museum and a collection of medieval and Renaissance Burgundian sculpture. In the old palace kitchen are six large fireplaces. The first floor is devoted to painting and sculpture: medieval Flemish, Swiss and German painting, Italian pictures of the 14th-18th centuries, Flemish and Dutch painting of the 16th and 17th centuries, French pictures of the 16th-20th centuries and sculpture of the 15th-20th centuries. In the Salle des Gardes are the tombs of two Dukes of Burgundy, Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, and altarpieces from the Chartreuse de Champmol, which was devastated in 1792.
