Tarka Trail

The Trail was described by Henry Williamson in his classic book `Tarka the Otter.' The 180-mile / 290-kilometer trail begins just east of Brayford and ends at Lynmouth. The trail leaves the road at the Lower Hall, by the signpost to Whitedown. From there it goes to Whitedown farm, where a path leads up to Whitefield Down and back onto the road. From there you turn left and head to Moles Chamber, where the road turns left, through three gates, across a marshy field and through yet another gate. The road then goes straight to Wood Barrow, through another gate, past Pinkworthy Pond, past Exe Head, left through another gate to the Hoar Oak Water and across the stream to the Hoar Oak Tree. From the tree you will follow the stream to the filed boundary, go uphill and eventually follow the stream to Hillsford Bridge. From there you go up the A39 to the hairpin bend and continue on the footpath to Lynmouth.

The trail can also be split into two sections.
Address: Tarka Country Tourism Association, Box 4, Chulmleigh EX18 7YX, England
Tips: Trail is marked with posts showing otter paw-print. You will need two cars because there is no public transportation available between Brayford and Lynmouth.
